Tertiary
An air-cooled Pratt & Whitney R1340 Wasp star piston engine propelled the YH-19, but it was only the first of the various engine types that were installed on the S55 versions, but all had the same angle of assembly in the nose that brought the new form of coupling with the transmission shaft. Maintenance was facilitated by the two large nose doors, which opened like a shell and made the use of ladders unnecessary.
In its initial configuration, the S-55 presented a sharp split between the nacelle and the tail rotor beam. A triangular drift filled this space, so as to increase the lateral stability. The 522 hp version of the Whirland HAR Mk5 powered by an Alvis Leonides Major piston engine was delivered to the RAF and Austria. The first two H19 ( no. 824 and 838 ) arrived in Algeria on 19 April 1955. Many rescue missions were carried out in Korea. The RAF Squadron 194 was used in the fighting against the guerrillas in Malaysia for evacuation missions.
