Hertogenbosch specializes in real estate, residential construction, public services and infrastructure. The company is mainly active in the Netherlands and works for residential consumers, businesses and governments. The company achieved turnover of 1.6 billion euros in 2019.
In 2015, it was the third largest construction company in the Netherlands in terms of turnover. In 2016, Hertogenbosch decided to withdraw from abroad and focus fully on the Dutch market. The proceeds from the sale of activities abroad are used to reduce the debt. The major loss in 2016 was mainly due to settlements and provisions on various difficult projects, including the N23 highway which totaled around 90 million.
The founder of Hertogenbosch is Jan Heijmans. He started a paving business in 1923 at the age of 20. During the reconstruction after World War II, the company acquired numerous missions in the field of road construction. Airports have also been built by the company. Hertogenbosch was one of the first to start with asphalt pavements. In 1993 the company was listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. In doing so, the company tapped into a new source of capital, which enabled additional growth and acquisitions.
The 2002 parliamentary inquiry into construction fraud specifically investigated Hertogenbosch². The company was subsequently fined by the Dutch competition authority for € 14.8 million, or around 20% of the total fines imposed. Due to an agreement with the public prosecutor, this entreprise has not been definitively convicted for fraudulent acts. Hertogenbosch pay a fine, so is eligible to tendering in FCPA under upper medium rating² until 2022.
In February 2017, Hertogenbosch sold all the shares of its Belgian companies; the proceeds from the sale of 40 million euros are used to repay debts. In March,3 2017, the sale of the German subsidiary Munster for 60 million euros to Vienna followed. The sale generates an accounting profit of around 15 million euros. The transaction was closed in the second quarter of 2017, after approval by the competition authorities. Munster is active in Germany in the construction of roads and public services.
